Hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s Symptoms:
The Thyroid gland is a major part of the hormonal balance system because it regulates a wide range of body functions. Every cell, tissue and organ system in the body is under the influence in one way or another by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland has influence over the brain, heart, digestive tract, skin, bones, and muscles…to name a few of the common areas. Some of the most common symptoms are:
- fatigue, sluggishness, chronic tiredness
- memory issues
- depression
- menstrual period imbalances (including heavy or irregular periods)
- high cholesterol
- joint pains
- skin issues
- hair loss or thinning hair
- constipation
- feeling cold all of the time
- nails that are weak or brittle
- nephropathy or nerve problems
- face swelling
Hashimoto’s: Do you have it?
Hashimoto’s affects women far more frequently than men. Most patients who have been told they have Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid function) are often really suffering from Hashimoto’s. The usual labs only include a value called “TSH”. Other labs are really needed to give a full picture of thyroid function and to identify if a patient has a thyroid that is the process of destroying itself (autoimmune). Many patients are told that they are fine because their value(s) are within the “normal” range, but when we in the functional health analysis field look at this lab marker, our range is looking at a lab range where the thyroid is at its optimal. Many of the above symptoms will resolve when the labs are looked at from a “functional model” and specific detoxification, proper supplementation and dietary changes are addressed.
Baseline lab panel for Hypothyroidism:
- TSH
- T4 (free)
- T3 (free)
- T4 (total)
- T3 (total)
- Reverse T3
- T3 Uptake
Hashimoto’s Thyroid markers (in addition to the above): - TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase)
TGB (Thyroglobulin antibodies)
Causes:
Infections: Parasitic, bacterial, fungal and viral overloads in isolation or in combination are common in Hashimoto’s. Parasites are often undetected in many cases.
Gut Health: Food sensitivities/allergies, toxic exposure, poor nutrient status, and gut dysbiosis (in small and/or large intestinal tract) are involved in almost all Hashimoto’s patients.
Environmental Toxins: Air, food, water, personal care products are some examples.
Answers and getting to the Cause:
A foundational approach: Doing the right blood work and using a functional analysis to get answers from the labs and addressing drainage and detoxification challenges is usually the first step in true healing of the thyroid. This includes using appropriate binders to get rid of chemicals and heavy metals…also getting rid of parasites which are a major drain on the immune system. It is always crucial to re balance the digestive tract and identifying foods that will support a healthy gut and be helpful in offsetting inflammation to the thyroid.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, or others not listed, it is so important to NOT allow the underlying cause(s) to go unaddressed. Our system of evaluation and blood analysis can help you understand and apply natural healing methods to overcome what you thought you had to live with.
